English as an Additional Language

Bilingualism

Our strategy at Britannica in the secondary department is to strive to teach English as an Additional Language while respecting our students' mother tongues. We encourage bilingualism and make students feel valued and fully part of the school's community

An Internationally Linguistically Diverse Student Body

Our students are taken out of English First Language, Humanities and if needed Modern Foreign Language classes. We aim to help beginners and newcomers relax and enjoy being in our school, to get children back to mainstream as soon as possible and to ensure that they are progressing well.

Second Language Acquisition

Our teachers also come from various linguistic and cultural backgrounds so our students feel confident from the beginning, even if they do not speak English at all. We believe that allowing students to use their mother tongue is crucial for second language acquisition as it scaffolds new vocabulary and knowledge of English.
